Hiya! Fáilte chuig mo Bhlog!! Welcome to my Blog! For ages I've avoided writing a "Blog" - even the use of the word was anathema to me -it sounds so unlyrical, ugly, even - and so I (perhaps foolishly, perhaps, snobbishly) resisted until, finally, I realised it was akin to holding out, Canute-like, against the use of the word "cool" or the wearing of hugely baggy trousers by young people...And so, here I am, contrite, humbled, writing on my Blog page. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
Poetry&Music night at WAS |

Another lovely night at WAS (Working Artist Studios) - "where Art and Culture meet"- last night. In our on-going committment to presenting high quality Art and Cultural events, our guest last night was the Dún Chaoin, Co.Kerry -based poet, Áine Moynihan.
Áine preparing for the reading
Áine and I were in a poetry group years ago in Dún Chaoin. In a funny way, we've circled, or reflected, each other, as her family moved to Dún Chaoin from Oileán Chléire, while mine moved from Dún Chaoin to West Cork!
A selection of Áine's work, the beautifully entitled, Canals of Memory, was published in 2008 by Doghouse and contains work of aching beauty, gorgeous imagery and, as Thomas McCarthy put it, "a considered and beautiful tone of compassion". They are gentle, yet full of passion, incisive, insightful and crystalline.
Last night, Áine read from this collection and also some other poems, including new work. As a trained, professional actor, her readings are wonderfully entertaining: she brings the poetry alive and imbues the experience with her warm, expressive personality.

As usual, we interspersed the poetry with musical interludes and the wonderful Breeda Murphy and yours truly sang some songs which were in keeping with the tone of the preceding poems. Wine flowed (sensibly!) and Marie's delicious tapas kept energy-levels high! The rapt audience gave a great reception to Áine's beautifully balanced presentation and after a short break, everybody joined in the music and poetry.

Some of the happy, appreciative audience...

Barry McCullough, finger-picking guitarman!

Vinnie Bourke, into the music, on his mandola...
Mary Jordan, of WAS, in full flow...

Breeda Murphy, about to sing...

Well, of course I played, too!
