Paul's Blog

Hiya! Fáilte chuig mo Bhlog!! Welcome to my Blog! For ages I've avoided writing a "Blog" - even the use of the word was anathema to me -it sounds so unlyrical, ugly, even - and so I (perhaps foolishly, perhaps, snobbishly) resisted until, finally, I realised it was akin to holding out, Canute-like, against the use of the word "cool" or the wearing of hugely baggy trousers by young people...And so, here I am, contrite, humbled, writing on my Blog page. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...

Lovely night of music and poetry in W.A.S.

Amazing to think we've been going for TEN YEARS! We're going to celebrate in style - the way we do everything! We plan to have at least one event each month and there are some exciting prospects in store over the year. Ten Years! Any excuse! We may just keep going and have an event every month for ever! Why not? It's so important to provide a place for live music and poetry as well as the visual art space. To offer a forum for new music, performance and poetry and encourage artists of all disciplines to come forward.

We kicked off our 10th Anniversary Celebrations with a night of music, poetry and craic on the 5th February, also celebrating Imbolc, the arrival of Spring. At last!

Delicious nibbles! Local cheeses, etc. prepared by Marie and Mary. It was a bring-your-own-bottle night, we can't afford to keep that thirsty crowd in gargle! Overlooked by a selotape and fibreglass sculpture by Dubhaltach Ó Colmáin, called "Chrysalis".

Some of the expectant audience - expectant, appreciative and most discerning! (note empty plates!!)

Liam Kenneally, Paul Ó Colmáin, Tim Abbott, performing at WAS

Liam Kenneally, yours truly, Tim Abbott and Breeda Murphy (out of sight - in every sense!) opened the procedings with some songs of mine and a few traditional tunes. Gradually people joined in...There was  special moment when we marked the passing of the legendary Kate McGarrigle with a set of her songs. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.

Tim Daly, poet and songwriter at WAS

Tim Daly, local poet and songwriter, descended from the great Ó Dálaigh clan of Poets, read us some of his poems. Some very humourous, while others are extremely moving, Tim gave an excellent reading.

Ah, there they are! Tim Abbott and Breeda Murphy harmonising perfectly, mar as gnáth. Go n-éirí go deo leo! More! More!

Good Dead Me, rock band in WAS

And just in case it was all getting too sweet and gentle, three quarters of local legends, punk band, Good Dead Me, leaped up on-stage and treated us to an acoustic set, featuring guitars, ukelele, banjo and mandoline. Punked-up folk songs and folked-up punk. Their new album, "That's What You Get" is just out, by the way, a slice of perfect rock, all original, in every sense. Watch this space!

Breda Cooney at WASFolk-singer, Breda Cooney also graced us with a lovely set...

...and Det gave us that Continental touch! Or something...

Dubhaltach Ó Colmáin, sculptor, childrens' author and musician at WASDubhaltach Ó Colmáin, sculptor, childrens' author and musician played a few of his own, powerful compositions.

The music went on well into the early hours of the morning, unstoppable! Eventually, we wended our weary, happy way home, leaving the night to Chrysalis and the shadows...The end of the "Whispers of Winter" exhibition in WAS gallery. Can't wait for the next event! Not long to wait, March 4th, featuring leading poet James Harpur
